Tips to get rid of mould and mildew in your home

What is mould on walls, damp and mildew caused by?

Mould is common problems in many homes, and they can be caused by a variety of factors. One of the main causes is condensation, which occurs when warm, moist air comes into contact with a cooler surface. This can result in the growth of black mould and other types of fungi, which can be difficult to treat once they take hold. Rising damp is another common cause of mould and mildew, particularly in older properties where the walls may not be properly insulated. If you notice signs of mould or mildew in your home, it is important to address the underlying causes and take steps to treat the problem before it becomes more serious.

Can you clean mould or remove mould with bleach or mould spray?

While there are numerous products on the market that claim to effectively remove mould spores, many homeowners wonder if bleach or mould spray can do the job. While these products can be useful in some cases, it's important to note that not all types of mould can be eliminated with them. Additionally, improper use of bleach or mould spray can cause harm to both your health and the surfaces you are trying to clean. If you're dealing with a significant mould problem, it may be best to consult with a professional who can provide safe and effective solutions.

How to clean mould and mildew in your home: tips for mould treatment.

Assess the Situation

Before starting the cleaning process, identify the mouldy areas in your home. Common hotspots include mould in the bathroom, kitchens, basements, wallpaper and poorly ventilated spaces. Ensure you have proper ventilation and take necessary safety precautions, such as wearing gloves and a mask. Check those pesky tiles too, as mould growth is harboured in the crack between them.

Gather Your Mould Remover Supplies!

To tackle mould and mildew stains, you'll need some bleach. Additionally, grab a clean cloth, scrub brush, sponge, water, and a bucket.

Prepare a Cleaning Solution

Mix one part bleach with four parts water in the bucket. Stir well to create a diluted solution that will effectively treat mould stains.

Apply the Solution

Dip the clean cloth or scrub brush into the mixture and gently scrub the affected areas. Make sure to cover the entire stained surface thoroughly to stop mould growing.

Allow Dwell Time

After applying the solution, let it sit on the mould and mildew stains for approximately 10 minutes. This will give the mould treatment enough time to penetrate the stains and break them down.

Scrub and Rinse

Using the scrub brush, agitate the stains with firm but gentle strokes. Pay extra attention to stubborn areas. Once the stains begin to loosen, rinse the area with clean water. Repeat the process if necessary.

Dry and Ventilate

After rinsing, ensure the areas of mould is completely dry and open windows to get some fresh air in. Proper, well ventilated rooms are crucial to prevent mould and mildew from reappearing. You could also use fans, or dehumidifiers to promote air circulation.
